How to set a beer trap for slugs and snails
Slugs are drawn to the yeast in beer. A shallow container of beer sunk into the soil traps them as they crawl in. Best set in the evening, near plants with fresh slug damage.
Steps
- Find a small container — a tuna can, yogurt cup, or jar lid works well.
- Dig a hole and sink the container so its rim sits level with the soil.
- Fill it about halfway with cheap beer (any kind — the yeast is what attracts them).
- Set traps every 3 feet through the affected bed, close to damaged plants.
- Check each morning, empty out the slugs, and refresh the beer every 2–3 days or after rain.
Helpful tip
If pets or wildlife are a concern, use a container with a lid and cut slug-sized slots into the side.
