Fuzzy golden-brown bee that visits flowers to gather nectar and pollen. Bees pollinate most fruiting vegetables — cucumbers, squash, melons — so more bees means more food.

• Bees moving flower to flower on cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and herbs.
• Better fruit set in bee-pollinated crops.

• Plant a mix of flowering herbs (basil, borage, thyme) alongside vegetables.
• Spray any pest treatment in the evening when bees aren't active.
• Provide a shallow water dish with pebbles so bees can safely drink.
