Butterfly

Adult butterflies are pollinators. One exception: the small white cabbage butterfly lays eggs that hatch into cabbage worms — so watch broccoli, cabbage, and kale when you see them fluttering low over the bed.

• Butterflies drifting between flowers — good.
• Small white butterflies zig-zagging over cabbage-family plants — check leaves for tiny yellow eggs.

• Plant flowering herbs to keep pollinators around.
• Cover broccoli, cabbage, and kale with lightweight row cover if you see small white butterflies.
